At Why Not A Pear, our mission has always been simple: remove barriers and create opportunities for children of all abilities. Recently, we had the privilege of helping a family do just that, and the impact has already been life changing.

A Family Determined to Give Their Son More

Elijah’s family first learned about Why Not A Pear through social media and a close friend. After reading testimonials from other families, they decided to reach out, hoping we could help them achieve something that felt just out of reach.
Their goal? An adaptive bicycle.
Elijah lives with complex medical and physical disabilities, which means he requires specialized equipment to safely participate in everyday recreational activities. Like many families in similar situations, they faced a difficult reality: insurance often does not cover adaptive equipment, even when it’s essential for a child’s quality of life.
Despite their determination—fundraising, reaching out to friends and family, the cost of the bicycle remained a major obstacle. They need $3,650 for the bike!
That’s where Why Not A Pear stepped in.

Making the Impossible Possible

With support from family, friends, and Why Not A Pear, Elijah’s family was able to purchase the adaptive bicycle he needed.
This wasn’t just about getting a bike; it was about giving Elijah an experience he had never truly had before.
For the first time, he could ride alongside his siblings, join neighborhood kids, and enjoy the outdoors in a way that felt natural and independent.

Confidence, Independence, and Joy

The impact was immediate. Since receiving his bike, Elijah’s confidence and strength have already grown. He’s learned to ride independently, up and down his long driveway, and is excited to take his bike on family outings and camping trips this summer.
But beyond the physical benefits, something even more powerful has happened.
“Elijah is no longer defined by his challenges in those moments, he’s just a teenage boy who loves to ride fast.” Says Tracy, Elijah’s mother.

Why Adaptive Equipment Matters

Elijah’s story highlights an important issue: access.
For children with disabilities, adaptive equipment isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. It allows them to:
  • Participate in sports and recreational activities.
  • Build confidence and independence.
  • Strengthen their physical health.
  • Connect socially with peers and siblings.
  • Experience the same childhood moments many take for granted.
Without this equipment, many children are unintentionally left out, not because they lack interest or ability, but because they lack access.
Every child deserves the opportunity to play, to explore, and to belong.

A Smooth and Supportive Process

Elijah’s family also shared how easy and supportive the process was from start to finish. From clear communication to a simple application, they felt guided and supported every step of the way.
Most importantly, they felt heard.
When asked if they would recommend Why Not A Pear, their answer was clear:
They would recommend it to any family looking to improve the life of a child with special differences. Because this support didn’t just provide a bicycle, it opened up Elijah’s world.

Why A Pear?

Stories like Elijah’s remind us why this work matters so much. There are countless children who just need the right tools to unlock their potential and experience the joy of simply being a kid.
The apple is the symbol of education; it’s perfect in color, shape, and just like the other apples. Pears are not; they are lumpy, and they are all very different from one another. Just like how every kid and adult learns. No learning method or even bike fits all.
At Why Not A Pear, we’re proud to be part of those moments, helping turn “maybe one day” into “right now.” Need some support for your children or programs? Learn more and apply for help here. Don’t need help, but would like to help yourself, donate here!
